Boulder Valley Technical Education Center (TEC)
Boulder Valley's area vocational school was the first to be established in the state of Colorado. Boulder Valley Schools began offering Adult Education in 1952 at various locations throughout the County. Between 1964 and 1975, the present "Vo-Tech" campus at 6600 Arapahoe Road was constructed, and adult/community education, secondary vocational, and post secondary occupational education were offered with over 1,000 students enrolled in 13 secondary and 17 post-secondary courses, day and evening classes on the new campus.
In 1973, Colorado established a statewide system of post secondary occupational training programs under the supervision of Colorado Community Colleges and Occupational Education System CCCOES (recently renamed to Colorado Community Colleges System - CCCS), and articulation agreements were in place with various community colleges. In 1997, as a result of the dissolution of a brief partnership with Front Range Community College, the adult and post-secondary offerings were discontinued at TEC, and for the past six years, only high-school students have been able to enroll in TEC programs.
In April 2004, TEC’ status as a state Designated Area Vocational School (DAVS) was renewed and approved by the state board of CCCS. Recently, the state established a state-wide escrow system, whereby career & technical coursework is transferable to any community college within the Colorado Community Colleges System. TEC is also currently accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. These actions paved the way for TEC to once again be able to offer adults the opportunity to enroll in available courses, starting Fall, 2004.
For school year 2006-07, TEC is anticipating an enrollment of over 400 high school students, and a limited number of adult students. TEC partners with Workforce Boulder County for appropriate adult career counseling and career pathway exploration, and continues to focus on offering career and technical education courses that are current with industry standards, integrate academic and technical skills, and meet the state escrow and certification requirements.
