BVSD students helped welcome author Homer Hickam to town where his book Rocket Boys is the featured title of this year's One Book, One Boulder County community reading project. They joined more than 100 people at the CU Stadium Club on April 17 for the dinner with the author, who spoke about the writing of his book and received an enthusiastic response.
The students had competed for the honor and read their winning essays to Hickam during the dinner and booksigning event. Hickam personally responded to each of the students:
Reece LeBlanc - Monarch K-8 School
Elise Princehouse - Broomfield High School
Marie Sanazaro - Nederland Middle/Senior High School
Tess VanLaanen - Centaurus High School
Alex Young - Southern Hills Middle School
Also in attendance was Johannes Seelig, a Southern Hills student whose essay was considered an "honorable mention" by judges of the BVSD competition.
"Once again our BVSD students have charmed our hearts and challenged our minds," said Judy Slinger, director of curriculum for reading and literacy at Boulder Valley School District. "Thank you, students and sponsoring teachers, for supporting this unique community partnership."
